? radiculopathy: One of the commoner causes of lateral lower leg pain is radiculopathy, when a nerve is compressed in the lumbar spine and causes pain in the leg region it supplies. Often the pain can start higher, in the buttock, but not always. Position, lying down or sitting, is often worse. Fortunately these often resolve on their own, but if there is any weakness or progression, see your doctor right away.
