A while: In most cases it takes a while for cancer to grow to the point of obstruction. It may be perceved as rapid, if the patient is unaware of the cancer.

Witin wks if RT used: Most throat cancers represent small part of oral cancers, the most frequent in tongue and floor mouth. If oropharynx or hypopharyns Ca, dx is squamous Ca very sensitive to RT/Chemo. Occasionally tumors arise from minor salivary glands. Rt will destroy tumor but block throat temporarily from swelling. If localized, transhyoid pharyngotomy results in easy resection of Ca with temporary tube feed
