Both could be right.: Trauma to the nail root can either temporarily or permanently cause a distortion of the nail plate. This distortion can often mimic a fungal nail infection. Having a fingernail that has a fungal infection is not as common as a toenail, especially on a 23 year old. You can settle the dilemma by having the nail tested for fungal spores.
