Meniscus tear??: Squats are great for large muscle training, such as Gluts and Quads. However, bending the knees too much while squatting puts stress on the posterior horn of the meniscus (a cushion). Don't bend more than 90 degrees (thighs parallel to the floor). Since your "soreness" is vague, I am concerned with "popping," which sometimes means a meniscus injury. See an Orthopaedic surgeon to check this out.
