If you lose weight: Usually acanthosis nigricans occurs in overweight and obese individuals and is thought to be due to insulin resistance which in some cases can progress to diabetes. I have seen it go away or become lighter in people who have lost A LOT of weight (at least 20 lbs) and kept it off. If you have or develop prediabetes and need medication, metformin which decreases insulin production may help.
