Why suffer?: No, pain is not normal. Erupting wisdom teeth hurt, but there are solutions, like removing the flap of tissue, irrigation, topical anesthetic, extraction, etc. See a Wisdom Tooth specialist, an Oral Surgeon, for immediate relief.

Yes and no: Yes it sounds like your wisdom tooth is impacted there and no these symptoms are not normal. Pain from impacted wisdom teeth could be caused by a number of things. In your case it sounds like you have pericoronitis of the impacted tooth. Don't chew on that side or area, rinse regularly with warm salt water, and make an appointment to see the dentist to have this evaluated.

Impacted, see DDS: Sometimes wisdom teeth are valuable asset when healthy and properly aligned, but more often, they are misaligned and require removal. The removal of wisdom teeth is one of the most common procedures at ages 15-24. See your dentist for evaluation and x-rays.
