Probably so: Most likely if you have an acute infection, it is a bacteria. The most common reason for this infection above the nail is an ingrown nail or hangnail. Topical anti fungal treatments will not treat an acute infection in that scenario. The treatment is drainage of the infection with possible removal of the nail.
