If the liver is so adept at regenerating are studies being done to understand the process and perhaps be able to synthesize the process for treating other damaged organs?

Yes: This is a basis of stem cell therapy. Some organs have a natural ability to regenerate such as the liver some do not such as the brain. Just about every cell in our body undergoes death and replacement. In time it may be possible to unlock the genetic measures behind the ability of these organs to regenerate.
