Side effects: The maximum dose for adults is 800 mg/dose or 3200 mg per day. Use only the smallest amount needed to get relief from pain, swelling, or fever. Take ibuprofen with food or milk to lessen stomach upset. An ibuprofen overdose can damage your stomach or intestines. If you take ibuprofen for a long period of time, our doctor may want to check you on a regular basis.

Yeah.....: First 600-800 mg is the maximum amount that is going to be relevant. More cannot be better. Then, it is above the dose the FDA has approved. Higher doses are more likely to damage kidney (but not stomach so much). It is NOT likely to benefit from ER treatment. If the urine looks odd (bloody or very cloudy) a visit SOON to the reg. doctor. Otherwise regular follow up on this (check kidney, etc).

YES.: Maximum single dose in 800 mg for adults and maximum daily dose 2400 mg. BUT I do not recommend the max doses for more than a few days. Also certain contraindications for some patients may apply as well.
