Tonsillitis: Let your doctor do a throat culture or rapid strep test to check if it is strep. If it is so, it needs to be treated with antibiotics for 10 days . If strep happens 6 times a year it might need surgery. Mono can cause sxs simmilar to strep tonsillitis it is a virus does not need antibiotics other virus can also cause tonsillitis no surgery needed for viral tonsillitis.
