Depends : What plates are you referring to. Growth plates are often times appear as a lucent area near ends of bones where growth occurs in young children and teenagers. When growth is complete these areas become as dense as the rest of the bone. In the skull of babies, the sutures are also zigzag lucent areas that close usually by 24 months give or take. I hope that answers the wit.
