What types of things (besides colds) cause swollen lymph nodes under the jaw bone?

Usually some: type of infection, in mouth, gums, salivary gland, mononcucleosis, tuberculosis, etc.. Less commonly, disorders of the lymphatic system, such as lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, sarcoidosis. Even less commonly, metastatic cancer from thyroid, lung, breast, etc. If it persists, you should get a medical evaluation.
