A member asked:

Can child have adhd when there is absolutely no family history of any mental disorders or disabilities? is it possible, but unlikely?

Certainly: Although genetics (family) does provide some input into the incidence of ADHD, it is not the only input. A variety of factors contribute to this problem.I find genetics alone are cited in about half of active cases.

Definitely: Example for nongenetic causes of ADHD are perinatal stress, low birth weight, traumatic brain injury, and maternal smoking during pregnancy.
