Hair loss?: The "white things" are the hair roots and they are gone forever. There are plenty of reasons for this. Best way to check is to have dermatologist take a punch biopsy of your scalp and checking under the microscope. A dermatopathologist will read the slide and give his considered opinion as to what's happening and why and what can be done.

Iron levels?: Iron deficiency and thyroid disease can contribute to hair loss. If these haven't been checked for, discuss with your doctor.

Trichotillomania: Usually hair loss does not result in the roots coming out like this, unless you are indeed PULLING on it. That's a really bad idea, sort of a compulsion in some, and it can really accelerate hair loss. At your age, you might also be in perimenopause so would get tested for FSH/LH also and if you are, get started on some progesterone. For stress, see checklist on Managing Anxiety. Good Luck!
