Jaw and Muscle Pain: It appears that you have a serious TMJ and muscle dysfunction that causes these muscles to go into a spasm and the jaw joint (TMJ) to be misaligned. You seriously need treatment from a dentist that is very skilled at treating tmj. Only about 5% of dentist are really good in this realm in that they are very familiar with multiple treatment options to select from based on the patient needs.

Seek care ASAP: The locking and pain is indicative of trauma in the joint and a posiible torn disc assembly. Have an exam by an oral facial pain specialist with the proper radiographs to determine the extent of the pathology.

See TMJ Expert: Most important, See TMJ expert. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
