No for antibiotic: no antibiotic is not sold over the counter, you need to see your PCP or your dentist for that. as far as pain medication concern, there is ibuprofen and Tylenol (acetaminophen) that you can take for pain.

OTC antibiotic: No OTC antibiotics in the U.S. But amoxicillin is generic and is cheap and if someone thinks you have a tooth abscess then penicillin class antibiotics are the drugs of choice. That's what your doc should be prescribing for you. As for pain killers Ibuprofen 10 mg/kg/dose every 8 hours usually works. I tell my patients to take it at 7AM-3PM-11PM. That is a very doable schedule.

No and DDS: Antibiotics require prescriptions from a health care provider. There are no equivalent effective OTC substitutes. While most OTC pain medication may help with pain from a broken tooth, the only long term solution is to see a local dentist for professional dental treatament. When was your last dental check-up?

See a dentist: In the USA, you need a prescription to get amoxicillin or any antibiotic. You need to see a MD or a dentist (physician of the mouth) to get a prescription. Same with an effective pain pill, so go right to the doctor who can help you the most...a dentist!

Not for Antibiotic: You really cannot treat a broken tooth with pills. Please call a dentist for an appointment and definitive care.

Yes: It's called the telephone. Call a Dentist. You can't cure an infection without help. Call a Dentist. Pills alone won't do it. Call a Dentist.

Get it looked at : You can't buy antibiotics over the counter in the US. The only pain med OTC is NSAID like Advil, (ibuprofen) Alleve, or acetaminophen. Sometimes Oragel can help with the pain. A painful and broken tooth is infected or on its way to being infected. Having a dentist look at the tooth and give you treatment options would be the best thing to do.

No substitute: Amoxicillin is an antibiotic, and there are currently no over the counter products that can do what Amoxicillin does to treat an infection. If you think that you have an infection in your mouth, you should get to your dentist as soon as possible. If you have tooth pain that requires the use of a pain killer you should also get in to see your dentist. A tooth will only get worse if left untreated.
