SELSUN SIDE EFFECTS: THERE ARE USUALLY NO SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS IN USING SELSUN. BUT WHY ARE YOU USING IT? THERE ARE DOZENS OF SHAMPOOS OVER THE COUNTER FOR DRY SCALP. HAVE YOU TRIED ANY? AS LONG AS YOU SHAMPOO OFTEN (AND I RECOMMEND AT LEAST 2 or 3 TIMES A WEEK), YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE DRY SCALP. IF THIS PERSISTS, SEE A DERMATOLOGIST. BEST LUCK . . .

Psoriasis: Differentiating scalp psoriasis from scalp sebohheic dermatitis can be difficult. Although treatments for mild cases are similar, oral immunosuppressants may be required to treat scalp psoiasis. Step one, see a dermatologist if otc medications are not working. Psoriasis is more likely if: rash extends below the scalp-line of if rash is also present on elbows, kneees, hands and feet.

Seborrhea/Psoriasis?: It could be either of these or a combination sometimes called "sebopsoriasis". If you haven't tried it yet, it might be worth trying Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo, now available over the counter (otc). This is an anti-fungal shampoo that can sometimes even cure seborrhea if used for at least a month. If this doesn't work, you may have a chronic condition in which case you should see your family doctor.

Scalp/Anal Itch: It sounds as if you have two contions. The scalp may be a condition called seborrheic dermatitis or psoriasis. The anal itch can be due to many things: toilet paper, foods, medications, soaps or detergents, improper cleansing the anal area, and more. See your physician; he/she can usually iron these problems out. Shampooin daily with a tar shampoo may help the scalp.

Scalp Psoriasis: There are a few medications for scalp psoriasis. Relief, but not cures. Tar shampoos (t-gel, tarsum, dhs-tar) and several prescription shampoos containing cortisone derivatives, such as clobex shampoo. Derma-smoothe fs, taclonex, and more are available. Very pricey and you need a prescription from your doctor to get them. Best luck!

I obsessivly pick sores on my hands and scalp, why can't I stop even though it hurts? Is it anxiety or something else?

Something else: If it 's not irritation (itching) then you probably have dermatillomania, which is just a fancy way of saying you obsessively pick at yourself. This is thought to be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder & may improve on an ssri antidepressant. Cognitive-behavioral therapy might also help. You could also try wearing a hat & gloves (kidding). Anxiety makes it worse.
