8 Subtypes of HIV-2.: There are 8 subtypes of HIV-2, the most common are HIV-2 Groups A and B. The remaining Groups have only been found in one person each and they have not been shown to be transmitted in humans by sex or sharing needles. HIV-2 should be considered in the differential diagnosis when a person is of West African descent or has had sexual contact or shared needles with such a person.
