No side effects: Vaginal swabs to diagnose infection cannot cause infection themselves. There are no side effects. If you're having discharge, odor, spotting between periods, low abdominal pain, or other symptoms of a possible genital infection, see a doctor or clinic. The testing and exam won't cause any problems themselves -- and you must be tested to learn the cause and get proper treatment. Good luck!
