Recurrent cold sores: Sometimes cold sores (herpes simplex infections) break through antiviral medication treatments like acyclovir. That can happen because Acyclovir may not be strong enough. There are two stronger and longer acting antiviral medications, valacyclovir and famcyclovir that may do better at preventing recurrence. Recurrence is also more likely if daily doses are skipped even once in a while.
