Irritable bowel synd: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is relatively benign compared to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBS is diagnosed clinically based upon Rome or Manning criteria (http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/irritable-bowel-syndrome/basics/tests-diagnosis/con-20024578). Depending upon age & other risk factors, some invasive testing eg colonoscopy may be performed but often diagnosis made clinical

Clinically ...: Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is characterised by abdominal pain, bloating and a change in bowel habit, or frequency present for at least 6 months. The pain is often eased by passing a stool, symptoms may be worse with eating. Your GP will take a history, examine the abdomen and likely order some blood tests to exclude other causes of abdominal pain and altered bowel habit. See http://patient.info/ibshealth#content

Rome criteria: Endoscopy is important to rule out a different reason for your problems, but not necessary to diagnose irritable bowel syndrome. The duration of symptoms , the pattern of pain and the association of discomfort with bowel movements can be used to see if they are compaible with a predefined rome iii criteria which can make a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome.

Mostly history: Inflammatory bowel disease is just that - inflammation of the intestine that is visible at endoscopy (upper endoscopy or colonoscopy) or imaging. The inflammation often leads to poor function. Irritable bowel syndrome is a functional problem. There is no sign of infection, inflammation, tumor, etc but it does not work properly. Things like caner, ulcers, need to be excluded.

IBS definition: Ibs is a generic term, not a pinpoint diagnosis, for people with vague GI symptoms with no discernible cause, and not one i personally use. It's a diagnosis of exclusion and convenience, so being tagged with it with one visit may not be ideal. If there's no absolute diagnosis, and your defined as having ibs, eat a broad diet with fibre, drink plenty of water, and add yogurt to diet. Good luck.

Hard diagnosis: IBS is usually a clinical diagnosis that is made based on history. It is a diagnosis of exclusion and usually made after other more serious problems are eliminated through testing. Best way to treat IBS is to have a consistent amount of fiber in your diet, exercise regularly, drink plenty of water and decrease stressful situations in your life
