Beta Agonist: Albuterol is a "beta-2 agonist" type drug. In addition to the effects of relaxing the smooth muscle in the lungs, it also stimulates the heart receptors, as well has having effects of "gluconeogenesis" and "glycogenolysis" both of which result in an increased blood sugar. Newer drugs like Xoponex have less Beta-2 effects, and thus have less likelihood of increasing blood sugar.
