It can: About 20% of women have "mittelschmerz " or pain mid-cycle, when ovulation occurs. The pain may occur just before, during, or after ovulation. The pain may switch from side to side, depending on which ovary is preparing preparing and releasing an egg. Nsaids are helpful for pain. If very bothersome, occasionally patients are put on birth control pills to stop ovulation and therefore the pain.
