Symptoms vary: An ovarian cyst can resolve on its own without symptoms. It can also rupture causing pain that requires emergency surgery. Usually surgery is not necessary and the pain is short-lived and tolerable. It is recommended that the patient avoid strenuous exercise because of the possibility of torsion of the ovary. If the ovary twists it can cut off its blood supply and die requiring surgery.
