Ask your doctor: The progesterone used in the perimenopause makes the lining mature and the lining sloughs off after you stop the progesterone. In the perimenopause u still have estrogen making the lining grow but only produce progesterone when you ovulate which happens less often. Giving you progesterone is like a medical D&C with the benefit of maturing the lining and thus decreasing the risk of uterine cancer.
