No cough medicine: The best medicine for cough is the medicine that treats the reason you are coughing. If your cough is due to asthma you need to treat asthma. If its due to reflux treat the reflux. If its due to pneumonia, bronchitis or sinusitis then treat the infection. I do not like treating symptoms unless i know the cause. If you have a persistent cough you need to see your doctor.

Hydration/Expectoran: Best cough medicine is to treat the cause of the cough like allergies/asthma/pnumonia/copd/stop smoking if smoker and hydration by drinking more fluids which makes the secretions thin and easy to cough out expectorations with or without cough suppressant like dextromethorphen and rarely opiates there is not one cough medicine for every one.It depends if cough is dry or with expectoration ask md.
