My son has a congenital lung bulla. is there other way of treating it other than surgery (removing the affected section of the lung)?

Treat if symptomatic: If your son is experiencing collapsed lungs (spontaneous pneumothorax) then surgery may be indicated. Sometimes its possible to do this via endoscopic surgery (through a flexible or rigid scope), sometimes it does require an open chest operation. Removing a portion of the lung - even an entire lung - won't limit your son's activities (but it does reduce his reserve). make sure he doesn't smoke!
