Dysmenorrhea: Painful periods (dysmenorrhea) can be initially treated with over the counter medications like advil, motrin, midol and ibuprofen. The key is to start taking something for them as soon as they start and then take something every 6-8 hours until it ends. If you wait until severe, not much will help. Heat and getting on the birth control pill may also help.

PG inhibitors: There are several prostaglandin inhibitors(PG) that contain ibuprofen(Motrin) or Naprosyn(Anaprox).. These drugs block the hormone (prostaglandin) that causes the cramps by acting on the uterine musculature when taken as directed. They are both available over the counter at the pharmacy.
