Maybe not on 1 side: Depending on how thin the recipient is, it may be possible to see and easily feel the kidney itself on 1 side of the abdomen. It is about the size of a grapefruit and does take up some space. Additionally, the average patient does (unfortunately) gain 20 lbs in the first year. If this has happened, you may be mistaking real fat for bloating. Any other causes should be fully evaluated.
