Lethal anorexia: You are right to be worried about your friend! It sounds as if she is quite underweight. Lack of menses for a year is a sign of this. She needs intensive therapy for this as it is both a mental and physical illness. She should know that mortality (death) is also high for the disease. ( one in 5 will die from it) encourage her to ask questions on Healthtap. Where is her family on the issue?

Good best friend: I wish a best friend's worry was enough to convince her to get help. Does she know that you are so worried? It must feel terrible to not have power over this - you might seek therapy for yourself over these feelings and invite her for a conjoint session. The other Dr's answer is fine too! All my hopes to both of you!

Get your friend to: talk to a professional. Speak to your or her parents or a teacher to make sure she starts working with a therapist. Be there to support her as she goes through the therapeutic process. You cannot do it alone and neither can she. It is a serious potentially life threatening illness, so make sure she gets treatment asap.
