Anaphylaxis: When facial swelling is present and associated with respiratory distress or trouble swallowing, a severe allergic reaction could be occurring. In these circumstances, a visit to an emergency room would be wise. In cases of poison ivy, oral diphenhydramine (Benedryl) may reduce symptoms.
