A few reasons: The most common cause is an autoimmune condition where the body starts attacking the thyroid gland, a condition called graves disease where the thyroid starts overproducing thyroid hormones. Viral diseases can also cause inflammation of the thyroid, hence causing hyperthyroidism (thyroiditis) as well as some medications, commonly medications used to treat bipolar disease.
