A member asked:

What does calcium channel blockers do and how do they affect the heart?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

BP and heart rate: calcium channels are channels located in cell membranes in blood vessels and heart muscle. Blocking their activity can have a blood pressure lowering effect, and certain of the calcium channel blockers slow the heart rate as well. There are 3 broad categories of these meds represented by diltiazem, verapamil, and nifedipine.
