Maybe...: Off-gassing is the release of volatile chemicals from new items. It can be from clothing, furniture, new carpets. New homes can pose a unique risk to people with very sensitive lungs and and can cause "new home syndrome". You don't really need to worry about the exposure to your child as long as there is decent ventilation in the room. New furniture will smell for a few weeks.

NO: new furniture smell should in no way harm a child, unless it was recently stained with a toxic varnish and there is not adequate ventilation etc. That being said. If the furniture was new and bought at a normal furniture store, and did not smell like recently stained pieces, etc, your child should be perfectly normal. You may consider opening a window to allow the room to be adequately ventilated
