This is for multiple reasons, but the strongest one is that they have a synergistic effect on the base of the brain, making it harder for the automatic processes that tell your body to breathe to work. There's also some medical evidence that benzodiazepthere's also some medical evidence that benzodiazepines, like Xanax, (alprazolam) may actually increased pain. This is not a combination that is generally advisable.
