Gravity: Dependent edema refers to swelling that is aggravated by gravity. Example if you twist your ankle and don't elevate it the swelling/edema will be worse than if you do keep it elevated. Independent edema is present whether elevation is employed or not. And may imply venous or lymphatic blockage that may be serious.
