A member asked:

Can there be any way to reduce side effects of external radiation for thyroid cancer?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Usually EBRT: Is used after i-131 has not worked completely, and the effects are due to attempt to treat nodal structures in close proximity to oral and swallowing structures. As with other head and neck cancers, pain medicines, a gastric tube to feed, and occasionally Amifostine is employed (i never use it, more toxic than beneficial), but discuss your concern with the radiation oncologist.
