A member asked:

Daughter has mosquito bites, and they are turning purple ? could this be a sign of west nile? she is also having bad headaches and body aches.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Response: The purple coloration in area of bites is more consistent with local bruising, perhaps made worse by scratching. If she has a fever, and starting to get generally sick, she could have an infection. N.B., most West Nile infections are usually clinically silent, and the vast majority of others are flu-like. It is rare that a full-blown brain infection occurs, in healthy children.
