Many things: Ultrasound is very good for some soft tissue and tendon issues. Swelling can be related to infection, tumor, or trauma. Ultrasound can detect neuromas, abscesses, cellulitis, and other tumoral processes. Sometimes other imaging such as MR will be employed to better define the abnormality, if detected by ultrasound.
