Stay on medication: Hypothyroidism is due to underproduction of thyroid hormone by the thryoid gland. The most common reason the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone (in the us) is due to autoimmune destruction of the gland. In this case levothyroxine is the medication of choice. Thyroid hormone does have a significant impact upon metabolism so it is very important to stay on a well balanced diet.
