D-dimer test: D-dimer uses antibodies to detect certain portions of the fibrinogen molecule that has been cross-linked, indicating that it was part of a clot. When elevated it means that two things have happened- clot formation, and at least the beginnings of clot break-up (lysis.) But it doesn't tell one where the clot came from or may have gone. Also, after surgery, #s can be high, so clinical setting matters
