Yes: High protein consumption has been shown to definitely affect kidney function - however there does not appear to be any conclusive evidence in the literature that these changes are ultimately detrimental. Bottom line - approach with caution, esp if you or your family has any history of kidney problems.

Maybe: Too much can indeed strain kidney function though this is highly variable. The real question is, do you really need a protein supplement? In most cases, even if you are working out and wanting to gain muscle, you can get more than enough protein in regular meals.
