Possibly: Most paints have some level of volatile organic compounds (some far less than others) or other chemicals that vaporize at least some. My suggestion is to ventilate room (windows, doors, fans) for 1-2 days minimum after final coat of paint before putting baby in that room. Should also use only very low VOC, non-lead paints.

Latex/don't worry: Most DIY painting today is done with latex paints (less work and smell).Even though there will be a scent after painting, it has no worrisome qualities that would make me concerned.Your 1 yo can sleep there if you wish.
