Remove your spleen?: AIHA occurs when your body attacks and destroys your own blood cells. Steroids (prednisone) are the first medications we try. But if that doesn't work, or if you have repeated problems, the next step is usually to remove your spleen, where the red cells are being destroyed. This is major surgery, so the risks and benefits need to be carefully reviewed with your doctor.
