A 30-year-old female asked:

Does flagyl 500mg contain penicillin?

Infectious Disease 53 years experience
Nope: Penicillin and metronidazole (Flagyl®) are entirely different antibiotics. Neither one "contains" the other. If you may have had a penicillin allergy and now have been prescribed metronidazole, you need not worry. There is no increased risk of an allergic reaction.
Dr. David Ziring
Pediatric Gastroenterology 22 years experience
No: Flagyl only contains metronidazole. Penicillin contains penicillin. The pharmacist does not mix the two together. They are unrelated.
Dr. Diane Minich
Family Medicine 37 years experience
No: It is not a penicillin.
