Two types: There are two types of IUDs that are available. One type is copper which is slowly released into the uterus and this stops the sperm from reaching the egg and prevents fertilization. The other type uses the hormone progestin. In this type the hormone causes the mucous to become thicker and prevents the sperm from reaching the egg in this way. This type also makes implantation more difficult.
