A member asked:

Why do my salivary glands sometimes sting when i eat something sour? is it cuz they're jolted into action too quickly?

Stimulated: We sometimes use sour tasting items to stimulate salivary gland flow to evaluate blockages in salivary ducts. If you have a stone in the duct it can produce sudden swelling but a sensation like you describe is most likely just caused by the sudden stimulation of the gland.

Not uncommon: Salivary glands, due to over production of saliva and pain is caused by the inability of the glands to discharge the saliva. See your PCP for consultation.
