What happens to lymph fluid when the lymph node/s are removed?

Lymphedema: Removing lymph nodes may lead to a problem called lymphedema. This is build up of fluid beyond where the lymph nodes were removed. For instance if lymph nodes were removed from under the arm, there may be chronic swelling of that arm.
