Your symptoms: sound consistent with constipation. However, having black stools that may be tarry is more concerning. While upper GI bleeding typically causes looser stools, you should have your doctor check. In the meantime, you might want to soften your stools with either Milk of Magnesia (magnesium hydroxide) or PEG 3350.
