Debrox: There are softening drops we can prescribe as Debrox and ceriminex which can help the wax clear. Usually wax buildup is asymptomatic, however and if he's crying and in pain, he may still have an ear infection! Has he had a recent cold? Does he console easily? Do Motrin or Tylenol (acetaminophen) ease his pain? History of ear infections? Contacts with smokers?

Wax removal: There are several ear wax dissolving drops available over the counter in the US. You likely have some there. You can also contact an ear specialist and have the wax cleaned out.Sometimes this is done under anesthesia if the kid is uncooperative, which many are at that age. That may be the only way to find out if the kid has a middle ear infection or not.
